Tradition

Since the establishment of the Department, initially as Department of Foreign Languages, in 1947, an English Programme has always been offered and run for students interested in mastering the English language and embarking upon a career in which English proficiency and related skills would be an asset. To date, the Department has nurtured a total of 467 graduates. However, in recent years this Programme is gradually losing its attraction, basically because the degree conferred is not yet an accredited degree and the nature of the Programme is no longer unique in Hong Kong. Therefore a replacement programme has been designed and the Hong Kong Council for the Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) has been invited to accredit the new design which is titled Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English for Professional Communication.

The new English Programme will be launched in September 2012, ready to receive the first cohort in the new Senior Secondary System which advocates both lifelong learning and whole-person development.
